Author Biography

P.K. Willey grew up in both the United States and India, and earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education from the University of Connecticut for her in-depth inquiry into Gandhi's ecological outlook, as a holistic, environmentally transformative, and self-educative philosophy.

Aunty Kamala (As she likes to be known) has studied the principles of ethical life by drawing on traditions as diverse as the all-inclusive Sanathana Dharma (from India), the Baha'i faith, Judeo-Christian faiths, and by taking inspiration from the personal life efforts of innumerable teachers: Paramahansa Yogananda, Peace Pilgrim, Mother Theresa, and many more.

In 1999, she left mainstream society and moved to an ashram in India to learn from the great Indian woman saint Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, also known as Holy Mother Amma, the Hugging Saint.

The tenor of Aunty Kamala's writing is first as a spiritual aspirant, and then as a mother who has faced life's pitfalls and tragedies, reflecting her deep regard for human beings, as well as her principled search for meaning and truth. In 2007 her beautiful 19-year-old daughter, Anni, died in her arms after a lengthy illness.

Aunty Kamala's current projects deal with ethical inquiry and nourishing awareness of the ethical crisis our planet faces, through activities related to M.A. Math, Wise Earth Publishers, and Earth Ethics. She works towards creating ethical instincts in children, and through action for people's democracy and human, animal, and environmental rights and responsibilities. Her works also include a musical album and poetry. With gratitude for having Amma's grace in their lives, Aunty Kamala and her son Linkesh presently live at Amritapuri, in Kerala, India.
